Your Spiritual Self
Spiritual direction is an ancient practice that has roots in most of the major world religions. It is a helpful resource for most spiritual seekers regardless of gender, race, religious or cultural background.
The term “spiritual direction” can be misleading. We could also use the terms spiritual companionship or spiritual accompaniment. The person who comes for spiritual direction usually has a belief that they are being directed, guided, nudged, lured from within by an inner voice, God, Spirit, the Universe, Allah, Higher Power, Self, or whichever term resonates with the individual. (Personally, I like the term Spirit and I use it a lot.) As a spiritual director I invite you to listen more deeply to that inner voice or movement or nudging of Spirit as you talk about your life journey.
In spiritual direction, two of us get together and listen for the voice of Spirit. Spiritual direction might look a little like counselling because it is a one-on-one practice and I will ask questions that will encourage you towards deeper reflection. The difference is that counselling can be task-driven and is often intended to address a particular problem. With spiritual direction the only task is to be open to Presence and notice the movement of Spirit in your life.
At various times this process can be challenging and thought-provoking. It can unlock deep feelings, which can be tough. But it can also unlock amazing feelings of connection, an understanding of purpose and meaning, and on occasion the most incredible feelings of being wrapped in unconditional love. Spiritual direction can help you to get in touch with your authentic Self and understand what you need to do in order to live in your own Truth. You have the answers.
